The story
The 8N was the tractor Ford built on its own after it split with Harry Ferguson in 1947. It kept the light weight and three-point hitch of the earlier 9N and 2N, but added a fourth gear, better brakes, running boards and 'Position Control', which let the driver set an implement at a fixed height.
Its grey sheet metal and red body gave it the nickname 'Red Belly'. Cheap, simple and able to pull a two-bottom plough, it suited small farms and became the best-selling single tractor model in North American history.
The split also led Ferguson to sue Ford for $251 million over the hitch patents.
